Mr. Osborn practices in the firm’s surety practice section and devotes a substantial portion of his efforts to surety litigation. He has extensive civil trial and appellate experience in both state and federal venues.
He spent his undergraduate years at the University of Southern California, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration/Public Affairs in 1980. From there he entered public service, working for the State of California in the California Coastal Commission’s Sacramento legislative liaison office. In this capacity Mr. Osborn analyzed proposed legislation affecting California’s natural resources. Although this was a full-time position, Mr. Osborn also enrolled in legal studies through the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1984.
Following graduation from McGeorge, Mr. Osborn entered private practice, initially emphasizing in medical malpractice defense. His practice ultimately evolved into a varied civil and insurance-related practice. Mr. Osborn had the opportunity to work in London, England with solicitors DJ Freeman, handling Lloyds of London maritime insurance issues and claims. His work included recovery and salvage of embargoed shipped goods as a result of the Tiananmen Square massacre and resultant Chinese government embargo on shipping.
While he has successfully tried cases to verdict for both plaintiffs and defendants, Mr. Osborn’s emphasis has been primarily defense-oriented. In this capacity he has handled intellectual property-trade secret disputes, legal and medical malpractice claims, insurance property and casualty disputes, and insurer “bad faith” claims arising under California law. He is well-versed in insurance coverage issues. With Booth, Mitchel and Strange Mr. Osborn handles surety-related litigation in all its forms. He has experience in all aspects of construction disputes and defaults on public works and private construction projects in California, including the pursuit of indemnity claims that may arise as a result.
Mr. Osborn is rated as an “AV” Preeminent lawyer with Martindale Hubble and is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, all California courts, including all Federal District Courts in California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Tax Court. Mr. Osborn is a member of the American Bar Association, Tort and Insurance Litigation practice section.
